While 5 years might not seem like a very long time in the grand scheme of a lifetime, a lot can happen in half a decade. That’s especially true with the current, virtually exponential rate at which technology continues to develop and advance.

Big changes happen faster than you realize. Some technologies that were mere futuristic ideals 5 years ago are now integral parts of average everyday life. Nothing is for certain and only time will tell how the future will unfold. However, here are 5 futuristic things you can expect to see become realities within the next 5 years.

1. Full-Length VR Movies

VR tech has advanced exponentially over the past couple of decades. Although it’s still somewhat limited, it continues to develop and find applications in more and more industries.

Based on the current advancement trajectory of virtual reality, there’s a very good chance that full-length VR tech-equipped movies will be hitting the big screen within the next 5 years.

2. Driverless Cars

Self-driving cars have been a hot topic of discussion for many years. However, the reality of driverless cars becoming a norm on the road might be closer than you think.

Many new cars that debut on the modern auto market already feature self-driving technology to some extent. Current driverless car technology already allows many high-tech cars on the market to parallel park themselves and even slow down and speed up automatically via adaptive cruise control based on road conditions on your route.

Based on current driverless car tech, fully driverless cars hitting the mainstream auto market within the next 5 years is more of a probability than a possibility at this point.

3. AI Sleep Optimizers

In this hectic modern world full of light pollution, noise pollution, and high stress levels, many people have trouble sleeping on a regular basis. Current technology has allowed for the development of sleep monitoring apps that track the quantity and quality of the sleep you get during the night.

Such apps are very helpful for many people who struggle to get enough quality sleep. However, artificial intelligence might just take this popular technology a few steps further within the next 5 years. Sleep optimizers that utilize artificial intelligence should hit the mainstream market within 5 years. These high-tech sleep optimizers would be able to optimize your sleep environment by controlling factors such as sound, light, and oxygen levels in your sleep environment. Through these efforts, these optimizers could maximize both the quantity and quality of the sleep you get.

4. Self-Filling Water Bottles

Self-filling water bottles might sound impossible. However, the technology behind them is already in its developmental stages. These functional and futuristic water bottles should hit the mainstream market en masse within the next 5 years.

These self-filling water bottles capture and condense moisture in the air in the form of humidity. They then convert the moisture into drinkable water. For convenience, the water can be stored safely inside the water bottle itself until you are ready to drink it.

5. 3D Printing in Medicine

3D printing already has many uses in the medical field. However, the applications of 3D printing in the medical field will likely expand significantly within the next 5 to 10 years.

Within the next decade, 3D printing is expected to grow into at least a $10-billion industry as the technologies behind it continue to develop and advance. For the medical field, this will likely mean better, more refined, functional, and readily available 3D-printed prosthetic limbs, implants, or even living organs for transplants.
